COURSE OBJECTIVE: To help students understand the role that nutrition plays in improving brain function and how poor diet and lack of exercise not only contribute to the numerous diseases that plague the twenty-first century today, but also to share with you the research that shows how poor diet can also contribute to age-associated senile dementia and even Alzheimer’s disease.
This course is based on the book, The Users Guide to Brain-Boosting Supplements, by James Gormley and the late Shari Lieberman, Ph.D, C.N.S., F.A.C.N. Students will participate in this course through reading assignments from the book and a few short online video presentations. Each student will be required to pass a series of four online tests to earn their completion certificate.*
COURSE OUTLINE:
Introduction Lesson: Boosting your Brain Power (PowerPoint Presentation) - This recorded presentation by Marcia Zimmerman, CN will give students an overview of brain health. (The book is not required for this lesson; students may begin this lesson while waiting for their book to arrive).
Lesson 1
Objective: To provide student with some background information about the brain and its dependence on good nutrition. You will discover the significance of the ApoE4 gene as well as understand the difference between forgetfulness and failing memory. Students will also explore the research and the roles that antioxidants play in nourishing the brain by serving as "anti-rust" treatments for the brain.
Lesson 2
Objective: To define the functions of each member of the B-Vitamin family and by presenting the research on which of the B-family of vitamins play a role in lowering homocysteine levels. Students will also discover the roles that Alpha Lipoic Acid and Acetyl L-Carnitine play in protecting the brain and reversing age-related mitochondrial decay.
Lesson 3
Objective: Students will focus on the powerful science behind herbs and specialized supplements, and how these targeted ingredients can provide remarkable improvement in cognitive functions and protection against potential mental decline.
Lesson 4
Objective: Students will learn some "mental fitness" techniques for improving memory as well how to exercise and train the brain for optimal performance. This lesson will also help students understand how the benefits of physical exercise for the body also enhances brain performance, and which dietary factors should be considered for optimal brain health.
Conclusion
This course concludes with an individual game of Jeopardy for those who wish to exercise their brain! All Jeopardy clues are based on the reading material.
